What is AOR in Canada Immigration? Explained Step-by-Step
Learn what AOR in Canadian immigration means, its importance, and the step-by-step process after submission. Guide by GO GLOBAL IMMIGRATION SERVICES.

If you're planning to apply for permanent residency (PR) in Canada, one of the terms you’ll frequently come across is AOR IN CANADA. AOR stands for Acknowledgement of Receipt — a crucial step in your Canadian immigration journey. It signifies that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially received your PR application and will begin processing it.

At GO GLOBAL IMMIGRATION SERVICES, we guide clients through every stage of the Canadian immigration process, from eligibility assessment to receiving the AOR and final approval.

What is AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt)?

The AOR is a formal email or document sent by IRCC confirming that your Express Entry or any other PR application has been successfully submitted and received. This document contains your application number, which allows you to track your application status online.

When Do You Receive the AOR?

You receive the AOR after you’ve completed the submission of your PR application along with all required documents and paid the necessary fees. For Express Entry applicants, this typically happens after you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and submit your complete application within 60 days.

  • Timeline: You generally receive the AOR within minutes to a few days after online submission. In some cases, it may take up to a week or two.

🛠 Step-by-Step: What Happens After You Receive AOR in Canada?

Here is what typically follows once you receive your AOR:

1. Application Completeness Check

IRCC verifies whether your application has all the required documents. If it's incomplete, it may be rejected.

2. R10 Completeness Check

This is a regulatory check under Section R10 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. It ensures your application is complete and that you've included necessary documents like police certificates, medical exams, etc.

3. Background Checks Begin

Once your application passes the R10 check, IRCC starts background checks, including criminality, security, and eligibility assessments.

4. Medical & Biometrics

If not already submitted, you’ll be asked to complete medical exams and biometrics, which are mandatory steps.

5. Final Decision

Once all checks are complete, IRCC will finalize your application and notify you with a Passport Request (PPR) if your PR is approved.

How Long Does it Take After AOR?

Processing times vary depending on the immigration stream, but for Express Entry applications:

  • Average time after AOR: 6–8 months

  • For other PR streams, it could take up to 12 months or more

Why is AOR Important?

  • It marks the official start of your application processing

  • Provides you with your application number

  • Allows you to link your application to your IRCC account for tracking

  • Initiates medical and background checks
