You’ve completed biometrics—now discover the next steps and how long it may take.
You’ve completed biometrics—now discover the next steps and how long it may take.

If you've submitted your biometrics for your Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) application, congratulations! You've officially crossed one of the key steps in the process. But what happens next? And more importantly, how long does it take after biometrics to receive your Canada PR? At GO GLOBAL IMMIGRATION SERVICES, we help applicants just like you understand each stage of the process clearly so you can move forward with confidence.

What Are Biometrics and Why Do They Matter?

Biometrics—your fingerprints and photo—are used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to verify your identity and screen for admissibility. Once biometrics are submitted, your PR application enters the final assessment phase.

Canada PR Processing Time After Biometrics

After submitting your biometrics, the processing time can vary depending on several factors:

Typical Timelines (as of 2024–2025):

  • Express Entry (FSW/CEC/FST): 4–8 months after biometrics

  • PNP (Provincial Nominee Program): 6–9 months

  • Family Sponsorship: 10–12 months

  • Other PR Streams: 8–12 months

These are average timelines. Actual processing can be faster or slower depending on your application's completeness, background checks, additional documents requested, and IRCC workload.

How to Check Your Application Status

You can track your application through the IRCC online portal or GCKey account. Once a decision is made, you'll receive the Passport Request (PPR), followed by your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).

Canada Open Work Permit Vs. Closed Work Permit

While waiting for PR, many applicants consider Canadian work permits to gain Canadian experience. Here’s a quick comparison to help you choose:

Open Work Permit

  • Work for any employer across Canada

  • Ideal for spouses of PR applicants, PGWP holders, or those with bridging permits

  • No need for a job offer or LMIA

  • Provides flexibility in job choice and location

Closed Work Permit

  • Tied to a specific employer and job location

  • Requires a valid job offer

  • Often supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

  • Ideal if you have employer sponsorship

Still unsure which option is right for you? Our team at GO GLOBAL IMMIGRATION SERVICES can guide you through your eligibility and help you apply for the right permit while your PR is in process.
