Canada continues to be a top destination for skilled professionals, international workers, and aspiring immigrants. Whether you’re planning to work temporarily in Canada or settle permanently through Canadian PR, understanding your work authorization options—such as open work permits, closed work permits, and Canada PR pathways—is the first step toward a successful future. At GO GLOBAL IMMIGRATION SERVICES, a trusted name in Canada immigration consultancy, we are committed to helping you navigate this journey with expert guidance, personalized solutions, and unmatched support.

Difference Between Open and Closed Work Permit

When it comes to Canadian work permits, the two main categories are Open Work Permits and Closed Work Permits. Here’s how they differ:

 Open Work Permit

  • Freedom to work for any employer across Canada.

  • No job offer required at the time of application.

  • Often issued to spouses of skilled workers or international students, and individuals applying for permanent residency under certain programs.

Common Programs Offering Open Work Permits:

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

  • Spousal Open Work Permit

  • Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

 Closed Work Permit

  • Tied to a specific employer and job location.

  • Requires a valid job offer and, in most cases, a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

  • You can only work for the employer listed on your permit.

When to choose?

If you have a valid job offer and your employer is ready to support your work permit application, a Closed Work Permit might be the fastest route. However, if you need flexibility or are a spouse of a student or worker, an Open Work Permit is ideal.

Is IELTS Mandatory for Canada PR?

One of the most frequently asked questions is about language proficiency—Is IELTS mandatory to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada?

Yes, IELTS is mandatory for PR under most programs.

Canada’s immigration system, especially Express Entry, is point-based, and language proficiency is a critical component. You must prove your English or French skills through designated tests. Accepted tests include:

  • IELTS General Training (English)

  • CELPIP General (English)

  • TEF Canada / TCF Canada (French)

Minimum score requirements depend on the immigration program, but generally, you’ll need a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) level 7 or higher to be competitive under Express Entry.
