Wondering what’s next after biometrics? Discover the Canada PR processing timeline and stay informed on your journey to permanent residency.

Applying for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada is an exciting step toward building a future in one of the world’s most welcoming and opportunity-rich countries. However, one of the most common questions we receive at GO GLOBAL IMMIGRATION SERVICES is: "What happens after I submit my biometrics? How long will it take for my Canada PR application to be processed?" In this article, we’ll help you understand the Canada PR Processing Time After Biometrics so you can stay informed and prepared while your application is in progress.

What Are Biometrics and Why Are They Required?

Biometrics—your fingerprints and photograph—are collected by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to verify your identity. This step is mandatory for most PR applicants and is usually completed at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) shortly after receiving the Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL).

Once biometrics are submitted, your application enters the next stage of review. But how long does it take after that?

Average Timeline (as of 2025):

Estimated Time After Biometrics

4 to 8 months

Provincial Nominee Program

6 to 12 months

Family Sponsorship

10 to 12 months

Start-Up Visa / Other PRs

Note: Timelines can vary depending on your application stream, completeness of documents, background verification, and IRCC workload.

What Happens After Biometrics?

Here’s a general flow of the process:

  1. Biometrics Collection

  2. Eligibility & Background Check Begins

  3. Medical Examination Review

  4. Final Decision & Passport Request

  5. COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence)

During this time, IRCC may or may not contact you for additional documents or interviews. It's important to keep an eye on your application status through your IRCC account.
